What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that originated in Japan and is based on the idea of transferring healing energy from the practitioner's hands to the recipient. Practitioners believe that this energy exchange can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support physical and emotional healing.

From a scientific perspective, while there is ongoing research into the effects of Reiki, it is often considered a complementary therapy rather than a replacement for conventional medicine. Some studies suggest that Reiki may help reduce anxiety and pain for some individuals, likely due to the relaxation response it can elicit. This response is known for lowering heart rate, decreasing blood pressure, and promoting an overall sense of well-being.

It's important to approach Reiki with an open mind and recognize that experiences can vary from person to person. Individuals may find it beneficial as part of a holistic approach to health, which may also include traditional medical treatments and other forms of therapy.

Reiki + Cancer:

Cancer patients often turn to Reiki as a form of complementary therapy to help manage symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. Here are some reasons why Reiki may be utilized by those undergoing cancer treatment:

  1. Stress Reduction: Cancer diagnosis and treatment can be highly stressful. Reiki is believed to promote deep relaxation, helping patients manage anxiety and stress levels.

  2. Pain Management: Some patients report that Reiki can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with cancer and its treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation.

  3. Emotional Support: The holistic nature of Reiki may provide emotional comfort, helping patients cope with feelings of fear, sadness, or uncertainty often associated with cancer.

  4. Improved Well-Being: Many patients describe a sense of peace and well-being during and after Reiki sessions, which can enhance their overall mental and emotional health.

  5. Supportive Care: Reiki is seen as a gentle, non-invasive modality that can be easily incorporated alongside conventional medical treatments without interference.

Prevalence: While precise statistics can vary, many cancer centers and hospitals offer Reiki as part of their integrative health programs. A growing number of healthcare providers recognize its potential benefits, leading to its increased acceptance among patients.

Overall, the positive experiences reported by cancer patients using Reiki can be attributed to its focus on relaxation and holistic care, offering comfort during a challenging time. However, it’s essential for patients to discuss any complementary therapies with their healthcare team to ensure a coordinated approach to their treatment.

People are drawn to Reiki for various reasons, and many seek it out to experience its potential benefits. Here are some common motivations and benefits associated with Reiki:

My Personal Journey with Reiki:

Let me share my personal journey with this powerful healing practice. My path to Reiki began during a challenging time when my father was undergoing chemotherapy treatments. Coming from a traditional Catholic Filipino background, where alternative healing practices were often viewed with skepticism, I initially shared those reservations. However, everything changed when my father received Reiki therapy at his Catholic hospital as part of their integrated medicine program.

The results were remarkable - my father experienced profound relief and a sense of peace that traditional treatments alone hadn't provided. This aligns with research published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine (2017), which found that Reiki significantly reduced pain and anxiety in cancer patients undergoing treatment.

My personal transformation with Reiki came four years later, after transitioning into the wellness industry. During a session with a skilled bodyworker, I experienced what research describes as an "emotional release" - specifically, processing grief that my body had been holding. According to a 2019 study in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 76% of Reiki recipients reported emotional healing experiences similar to mine.

While every person's experience is unique (and I'm happy to share more details of my story in person), the results I've seen in my practice speak volumes. In my former Redwood City studio, over 95% of clients reported experiencing deep relaxation and a profound sense of mind-body-spirit harmony - outcomes that are supported by numerous clinical studies on Reiki's effectiveness for stress reduction and emotional well-being.
